There are a few things I really like about this. First of all, I'm a huge fan of cell shading with a cobination smudge shading on digital artwork and I am even more amazed when it comes to physical work. I admire the way the colors mix and the cleanliness of the sharp lines before they morph into the background. The fade to white brings the colors out more to me.
Questions: A question I'd have is what materials did he use? How did he accomplish the sharp lines he did?
